Knowing how to pick a locking knife means choosing a tool that fits your actual use, hand, pocket, and local carry rules - not simply buying the biggest blade or the newest steel.

A good folder should open predictably, lock with confidence, cut efficiently, and carry without becoming a nuisance. Premium materials matter, but the right combination matters more. A high-end blade steel will not make up for a handle that shifts in your grip or a lock that is difficult to release safely.

Start with the work. Everyday carry calls for a different knife than a hard-use hunting, camping, or jobsite folder. Most people are better served by a purpose-built knife than an oversized “do everything” model that stays in a drawer.
